Ellen Gustafson: Obesity + Hunger = 1 global food issue

Summary:
According to Ellen, she talks about food programs and her two dreams about food system. First of all, Ellen explains that she has a food program for school calls “School Feeding”. This was her first dream three years ago. “FEED” company sold 550,000 bags which had meal boxes to children for 1 year. She wants to make everyone cherish food, especially children. However, 49 million hungers in the U.S. nowadays. The U.S. is facing a bigger problem now. One third kids are overweight or obesity. 67% adults are also overweight today. The percentage has doubled since 1980s. Actually, Americans are not only facing obesity, but all over the world. Ellen believes there are 2.3 billion obese people all over the world in 2015. Therefore, she explains why people get obesity more than before. It is because farming has changes since 1980. Ellen finds out more refines grains, add oils, add fats, and add sugars in food. That’s why people get obesity more than before. Unfortunately, food system is global, so she has second dream in 2010. She will have “30 Project” to change food system in these 30 years. She wants to stop these problems; find solutions to make food better; make everyone understands healthy food. (206 words)

Response:
I think everyone should watch the speech. Nowadays, many people have too much food, so they do not cherish food. Unfortunately, many developing countries are lack of food. I think we are so lucky because we are living in wealthy society. I strongly agree with Ellen that food is really not enough for developing countries. That’s why there are many hungers. However, we are so lucky. We can have many choices of food, so wealthy countries have many obesity. Sometimes we do not cherish food because we don’t know what hungry feeling is. For example, when I go to a Japanese restaurant or buffet restaurant, there are lots of choices for us. People get different food, but they haven’t finished it. I think they do really waste of food and money. I do really support Ellen’s 30 Project since she will change the food system. Actually if we want to be health, I think we should spend some time on cooking and exercise. The most important thing is do not eat too much processed food. Finally, I hope Ellen’s plan can be successful. (184 words)

  1. I agree with Irene’s opinion that some developing countries face the problem of lack of food. Actually, in my home country, our government launched the “afternoon meals” program for elementary schools about 4 or 5 years ago, but as usual, due to corruption and sometimes poor quality of food, this program is not too much successful. Some black marketers buy this food from the corrupt government officials because it is a cheap than the actual market rates. These corrupt government officials do this for the sake of money. I think government should take strong steps to stop this. On the other hand, obesity is also big problem for whole world, which causes diabetes and heart problems. After the globalization, our food habits and physical work activities have changed. When they go out on weekend, they eat fast food and beverages. After globalization, work patterns have also changed. Due to that, they do sedentary jobs and much mental work than the physical work. Their lifestyles have changed and this affects their health. However, this is not only the problem of one country; this is a worldwide issue. We should think about this serious issue.(Word count:192)

  2. I agree with Irene’s opinion. There are many unfair things exist in the world. As some examples is too much water in Vancouver but not in Africa, and I live in a house with my family but homeless not. For me, I think I do not have enough money to spend and not enough delicious food to eat. Sometimes, I will complain to my parents about this and that. When I on the street, I saw some nice clothing people wore. I admired it Moreover, I have an extremely strongly desire to buy it. If I compare with other poor countries’ people, I think I am living in a harvest. According to this, people have many choices will depressed than people do not have. We have high expectations will make more upset. In the world, some countries still lack of food and water. When we fell do not have good food, please think about Africa. People should feel enough and do not complain all the time. We should stand other people’ s points to see the things. Be happy with what you have.

  3. I agree with Irene’s opinion. There are many rich people in the world that they do not care for other people. Sometime we complain about our life as the sky said and we want to be like those rich people that they have everything. However, we have to think of other country that they do not even have enough water or food or even a good health care that can protect them. This video had very good message for all of us. We all have to learn from this video and always remember their situation before criticize about our own life. We should pray to the god for what we have also, for those people who need our help.

  5. I agree with Irene's opinion. Many people in the world do not know value of the food, especially kids. For example, my host family’s kids they usually put a lot of food in their plate and cannot finish it; sometimes they throw the rest in the bin. On the other hand, their parents always teach them that they are many people outside who are very starving and do not have any food to eat. I think it is good to teach kids since they are young. For instant, in my country, from the fact that we are agriculture country, so teachers always teach us to eat all of your food in your plate and do not waste any food because it is a tough job for farmer to grow rice.

  6. I agree with Irene's opinion. In recent years, with the growing population, more and more people pay attention to the food shortage. Particularly in developing countries, many women and children that acking of the ability to work in the harsh natural conditions are suffering from hunger. The world's population growth will greatly increase the consumption of food. The reduction of arable land makes the possibility of providing steady decline in food production. For the developed countries, food prices increased substantially is relatively light impact on people's lives. But for the poor countries, the results are devastating. The increasingly "food crisis" causes so many people in poor countries under the starvation threat and many countries are facing the risk of social unrest. China is a big country of agriculture and population, the Government has always attached great importance to the food problem. They always put the development of grain and agricultural production, solving the problem of feeding people on the most important position. In order to maintain the stable development of the world, food aid should be implemented between countries. Some developed countries should use its own technology to produce more and better quality of food to developing countries.

  7. I agree with you Irene. Nowadays people in developed countries are facing the problem of obesity; in contrast, people in developing countries are suffering from hunger. As Ellen mentioned, food is not enough in poor areas, I have a memory in my life about this. I had been to small villages as a volunteer in 2003. When I saw children in 12-15, I was totally shocked and felt sympathetic for them. Most children in the growing age are extremely skinny, usually one meal a day with a little rice and vegetables, they do not even know what ice-cream or cake is. I remember those children’s eyes, for the first time they have seen and tasted chocolate which I brought to them. On the other hand, people in developed countries which do not have the problem of shortage of food, how lucky they are; however, many of them are overweight, some of them are becoming overweight. According to Ellen’s program, it reminds me a TV show named “biggest loser”, the program helps obesities to lose weight, to eat healthy and to have a regular life. I hope someday developed countries can help developing countries, not wars but to develop their agriculture and food source.(words:203)

  8. As a matter of the fact, I weren’t surprised with that many people in US have problems with obesity. I believe processed foods in markets and their eating habits are the main reason of getting overweighed. Many processed foods include high calories and little nutrient, but people love choosing it since these foods make people easy and convenient to prepare meal. I believe American should learn eating habits from Asian cultures. For example, In Korea, Most foods is cooked by boiling and steaming and vegetables is main dishes. Moreover, we do not eat processed food as a meal and usually prepare meals even though it takes long. I believe if people prepare meals, they become think about nutrients and calories in foods. What’s more, I think US government should educate people how to avoid getting fat and how to have good eating habit through TV programs. In Korea, there are many programs these days warning obesity since many young children getting fat as they love fast foods and avoid working out. Therefore, many people have become think about their eating habits and plan to work out or control thier weight.

  9. Agree with your blog.... Beyond that, hunger is one of the main causes of premature death in children. Of the nearly 11 million child deaths that occur across the globe, 5 million of them can be attributed directly to hunger.
